When I woke up Wednesday morning, the only thing that played in my head was Nemo singing to his dad, “First day of school! First day of school! Time to get up! First day of school!” I cannot believe that my little boy is old enough to go to school. Sure it’s only half day Pre-K and it’s not at the public elementary school, but it’s still school darnit!
After being SO EXCITED for SO LONG about going to school, Justus was oddly quiet. “What’s wrong, Buddy?” I asked him as he ate breakfast.
“I’m really gonna miss you Mom,” he replied, looking forlorn.
“Oh no! You’re going to be having so much fun you won’t even remember I’m not there. But you know what?” I took his palm, kissed the inside of it, and pressed it into a fist. “Here’s an extra kiss just for you. You can squeeze it and it’ll be just like I’m right there with you.”
He brightened a little. “Okay.”
“You know Justus, Aunt Julia went to that exact same school when she was a little girl and she LOVED it. She said she had a lot of friends and the teachers were really nice. She really loved her school.”
He perked up considerably. “Okay!”
Once we finally got to school, before we headed in, we prayed together as a family. One last opportunity to bless my boy before he headed out on this first not-so-little step to growing up.
He headed in, full of excitement, to face his first day of school.
